What is a virtual PC (VDI)? (Email This Answer)

A virtual PC was originally defined by Popek and Goldberg as "an efficient, isolated duplicate of a real machine". Current use includes virtual machines which have no direct correspondence to any real hardware.[1]

W&L uses virtual PC's in many instances:

Windows Operating System running virtually on an Apple computer

Windows or other Operating System running virtually on a Windows based computer

Windows or other Operating Systems running virtually on VMWare ESX based servers

In all instances there is a demonstrated need to access an operating system which is different the base operating system the user normally interfaces with.

The reasons can include:

Need to run applications not available on native Operating System.

Need to run applications in a testing senario.

Need to maximize the use of Server hardware in the Data Center.
